A Black Man's Apology to Black
Women
Written by Enoch Hagans
Black women we as Black men have let you down and the whole world knows it. We
have let our freedom get away from us and the consequences of our actions have
been tragic. There can be no excuses for our lack of action in taking care of
our responsibilities.
Black men you know what responsibilities I am talking about;
(1) Leaving our women (Mothers, Wives & Girlfriends) to raise our children by
themselves;
(2) Abandoning our children;
(3) Refusal to financially support our sons, daughters and women;
(4) Being an active participant in the criminal justice system i:e jail, prison
or on probation;
(5) Being ignorant and rude in public;
(6) Not graduating from High School or obtaining a GED;
(7) Abusing our women verbally, mentally and physically;
(8) Using our women for casual sex;
(9) Just being known as the baby’s daddy and no more;
(10) Selling, buying or using drugs that brings down our community;
(11) Living off Mom and using her for financial support;
(12) Blaming everyone for their failures but themselves.
In the low income and urban communities throughout the country, Black women and
children are struggling to survive and endure the harshness of the hood! Our
women have to fight off the advances of black men not working, not looking for
work or even qualified for a decent job.
They hear comments like, baby I’m financially embarrassed, in between jobs,
can’t find work because of my criminal record or the white man’s holding me
down. Excuses, excuses, excuses and more excuses.
Since these Black men did not prepare for a career or employment by using the
free public school system, free public libraries, after-school programs, YMCA,
Boys and Girls Club, Job Corp, and other educational mechanisms available for
them free of charge their job and employment skills are to zero to none.
Even before this country was going through a economic downturn the unemployment
and career centers were filled with Black men looking for work usually only
finding low wage paying jobs or short term temporary work (Be advised the
Mexicans have cornered that market).
Even with seeing all the violence and death surrounding their communities young
Black males deliberately run towards the drug and gang life, glamorized in hip
hop videos. This in spite of what always happens to those who choose the THUG
and criminal lifestyle, jail, prison and eventually death. They are like moths
drawn to a flame.
Black men we cannot count on President-elect Obama, or the federal and state
governments to assist us in cleaning up our own communities. We must
collectively cooperate with each other to develop and implement viable job and
employment training programs designed to assist young Black males in developing
the necessary skills to enter the job market competitively either as equals or
be heads and shoulders above the rest.
To those Black men who have towed the line then this letter does not criticize
you, rather we salute you for succeeding in life with a job that provides for
your family. However, we must request that you reach back into the hood and
directly assist a young Black male child succeed in life. It could be something
as simple as reading a book to a child or encouraging him to graduate from High
School. Because in this War there can be no neutral parties. You are either part
of the problem or part of the solution.
Black women this letter asks for your forgiveness for the error of our ways. We
are also requesting that you give us some time to get our act together because
we must do so in order to for us to survive.
G-D asked Cain about the whereabouts of Abel and Abel replied “I don’t know
lord. Am I my brother’s keeper?” The answer is yes we are.
